Our top 10 favourite family tradition

1. ADVENT CALENDARS.

Advent calendars are a popular way to count down the days until Christmas. These calendars can build excitement throughout the holiday season, whether they contain chocolates, small gifts, or daily activities. Our girls love the cute tiny storybook advent calendar we got last year, and I cannot help but share. They get to open a new story and read every day till Christmas.

2. DECORATING OUR HOME

Families often come together to decorate their homes with lights, ornaments, and festive decorations. This may include putting up a Christmas tree, hanging stockings, and placing other holiday-themed decorations around the house. We particularly enjoy this fun activity amidst dancing to Christmas music. After the tree is fully decorated, we have a countdown from 10 before we light up the tree. We also decorated our front yard and surprised the girls with a special light-up ceremony. We always look forward to this every year.

3. MUSIC AND SINGING

Listening to holiday music or singing carols together is our festive tradition. Some families organize their own musical performances or attend concerts during this season. Our first daughter got us in this mood mid-year as she started playing Christmas music in July. We not only attended the Nutcrackers this year, but we also got to watch one of our daughters dance. We also love singing karaoke Christmas songs in our matching PJs on Christmas Eve.

4. HOLIDAY CARDS AND PHOTOS

Sending and receiving holiday cards is a common tradition. Some families love to create and send personalized family photos or update their yearly photo albums. This is a time when we love to dress in coordinating outfits and Christmas PJs to take family photos. It’s always fun to look at past pictures to see how much the girls have grown. Sending out holiday cards digitally or manually expresses how much of a blessing our family and friends have been to us.

5. HOLIDAY MOVIE NIGHTS

Watching our favourite holiday movies together is always something we look forward to. Whether it’s a classic movie or a new release, there’s always a list of must-watch movies during the holiday season. We usually wait till the week the girls start their winter break before we start watching our favourite Christmas movies. We grab our throws and snuggle in on the couch while munching on the giant can of popcorn filled with four different flavours (licks lip) with the fireplace cracking on to keep us warm. One of our all-time favourites is the Home Alone movie.

6. BAKING AND COOKING

So many families prepare special recipes or traditional foods during this time. We love to bake cookies, make gingerbread houses, or cook a special meal together. Our teenager now loves to explore and try new recipes too, so we are also looking forward to her creations this year. And since I am an avid cook, I’m prepared to cook up a storm as always this year.

7. GIFT EXCHANGE

Exchanging gifts is a classic holiday tradition. Families may have specific ways of selecting or wrapping gifts; some participate in activities like Secret Santa or white elephant gift exchanges. My girls. However, they love to take out of their piggy bank savings to get a special gift for each other and us. I only took them once, but they loved the idea so much that they look forward to shopping for each other each year. We also ensure we get their special gifts wrapped up and placed under the Christmas tree yearly. We try to get them educational gifts now instead of toys when they are much younger. It’s always fun to see them rush down on Christmas morning to see what they got.

8. ATTENDING RELIGIOUS SERVICES

For families who celebrate Christmas, attending a Christmas Eve or special holiday service at their place of worship is a meaningful tradition. We always look forward to celebrating Christmas with other believers in the church. The church Christmas service is usually packed with fun presentations and teachings. It’s always important to keep Jesus as the reason for the season by reflecting on his birth and purpose.

9. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Depending on the climate, families also engage in outdoor activities like sledging, ice skating and driving around the neighbourhood to see the beautiful light displays. We went ice skating last year and may try a different outdoor activity this year.

10. VOLUNTEERING AND GIVING BACK

Many families make it a tradition to give back during the holidays by volunteering at local charities, participating in food drives, or donating items in good condition to those in need. We must also remember to share and give to those in need as much as we can during this season and out of the season. Look around you and find a way to put a smile on someone’s face this Christmas. When you involve the kids, it helps them to see how life does not revolve around them only.

Remember that the most meaningful traditions are those that resonate with your family values and bring joy to everyone involved. Creating and maintaining traditions can be a wonderful way to strengthen your family bond and create lasting memories.
