Best ways to be a Goal Getter this year

Best ways to be a goal getter this year!

This year may have started as a drag despite your beautiful intentions as we experienced a great influx of flu, covid 19, and several other viral infections. But in life, each year presents us with a canvas for growth, dreams and aspirations. For us Christian moms and daughters, weaving faith into the foundations of our goals can be a transformative experience leading us to be goal-getters. So, as we embark on the journey of this new year 2024, it is never too late to set your goals on foundations of faith that can help you achieve those goals.

It is important to set individual goals and family goals. There is a saying that says those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Even though no one sets out to intentionally fail, this happens most times due to a lack of proper planning. Imagine a family without a collective goal they are working towards will do anything and may not love the outcome at the end of the year. When you set goals together as a family, you have something to look forward to together and when you make sacrifices along the way to achieve those goals, it won’t be a surprise to your girls. So let’s dive in, shall we?

The Power of Prayer

In the quiet moment before dawn, find solace in prayer

"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;" - Psalm 63:1

A lot of us are faced with uncertainty in this world and fervent prayers should always be your go-to and beacon of hope. Start every morning by pouring your heart out to God where you are certain to get clarity of your purpose and complete guidance for your decision and actions. While consistently doing these, your daughters wil also be empowered by your unwavering faith and will learn over time that prayer is not just a ritual but a lifeline connecting them to divine wisdom.

"Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. - Psalms 37:5

Divine S.M.A.R.T Goals

Set a calm relaxing atmosphere with your favorite music, cookies and tea then delve into of your goal setting. Start with your individual goals and then your family goals. Stress the importance of making your goals Specific, measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound- The S.M.A.R.T approach. My daughters had goals that had to do with their academic skills and to make it S.MA.R.T, we broke the goals down like this:

  • Specific: Instead of a vague goal like I want to do better in school, we have I want to improve my grades in math.
  • Measurable: To measure the progress we have, I will aim to increase my math grade from a B to an A.
  • Achieveable: We made sure the goal was realistic and attainable – I will work hard to raise my math grades to an A in the next three months.
  • Relevant: We made sure the goal aligns with the overall academic objectives – Math is a core subject required for her future so it is considered relevant.
  • Time-bound: We set deadlines to create a sense of urgency – I will increase my math grade from a B to an A by the end of the school year.

The result:

I will improve my grades in math by focusing on raising my current grade from a B to an A by the end of the school year. I’ll measure my progress by tracking my test scores and completing assignments with more accuracy. I believe this goal is achievable through consistent study sessions, seeking help from teachers when needed, and practising math problems regularly. This goal is relevant to my academic growth, aligning with my aspirations for my future pursuit. I’ll complete this objective by the end of the school year, providing a clear time frame for achievement.

Follow the same pattern for your own goals and the family goals.

The Vision Board

When it comes to your goals, visualization cannot be overlooked or over-emphasized. Both internal and external visualizations are powerful tools that will drive the achievement of your goals.

"And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry". - Habakkuk 2:2-3

The best way to the visualization of our goals is creating a vision board. You can either create a manual or a digital vision board. Over the years we created manual vision boards by cutting out inspiring magazine images, bible verses and snapshots of activities we wish to accomplish but this year we made digital vision boards using Canva. All we had to do was drag inspiring images, quotes, bible verses….. into our favourite vision board template. We printed them out when we were satisfied with the outcome and placed them where we could see them every day. The board becomes a daily reminder of dreams and visions. The board has served as a source of encouragement during challenging times. Make personal and family vision boards using the S.M.A.R.T. goals you have written down.

Family Meetings

Have regular family meetings to discuss personal and family goals. It is a positive outlet and a safe space to share triumphs, struggles and to feel the warmth of the family support. You will notice the blossoming of resilience and determination in your home when you are faithful and consistent with these meetings. These meetings not only foster accountability but also create a space for prayer, mutual encouragement and celebration of victories, big and small.

Mentors and Community

Find strength in connecting with other Christian families and mentors. Through shared experiences and support, you will gain valuable insights and encouragement. It is important to surround your family with a good support system, especially your girls. Do not allow other negative voices around them to overshadow the positive ones – school, friends, counsellor, media, books, the internet will most likely overshadow you if you are the only one voice in their head. Prayerfully seek and build your trusted circle of community and as they pour into you, pour into them as well.

Gratitude as a Lifestyle

Let gratitude be your lifestyle as you watch your goals materialize. Express gratitude for the progress made and the blessings received to help foster a positive mindset. Turn every ordinary moment into an opportunity for thanksgiving.

As you navigate the uncharted waters of 2024, let your eyes be on the goals, so that your life can be a testament to the transformative power of faith. Through prayer, intentional goal setting, visualization, community support and gratitude, you and your daughters can achieve great success through determination and unwavering faith.
